Jyotirlingas are considered as one of the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva. These are twelve shrines located in different parts of India, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as a Jyotirlinga or a radiant light. The fourth Jyotirlinga is located in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. In this article, we will discuss the significance and history of the fourth Jyotirlinga.


Omkareshwar is a small town located on the banks of the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. The town gets its name from the Omkar-shaped island formed by the river at this location. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple is located on this island and is considered to be one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Hindus.


According to Hindu mythology, the story of Omkareshwar dates back to the time when the Devas and Asuras were fighting for control over the universe. During this time, the Devas were losing the battle and sought help from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a Jyotirlinga and defeated the Asuras. The Devas were overjoyed and built a temple at the site where Lord Shiva had appeared.


Another legend associated with the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is that once upon a time, Narada Muni visited Mount Kailash and told Lord Shiva about the beauty of the Narmada River. Lord Shiva was so impressed by Narada Muni's description of the river that he decided to visit it. He appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga at the site where the river formed an Omkar-shaped island. He stayed there for a long time, meditating and blessing his devotees.


The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple is an architectural marvel and is believed to have been built during the 11th century. The temple complex comprises two main shrines, one dedicated to Omkareshwar and the other to Amareshwar. The Omkareshwar shrine is located on the Omkar-shaped island, while the Amareshwar shrine is located on the mainland. The two shrines are connected by a footbridge.


The Omkareshwar shrine is a four-story structure with a shikhar (spire) that rises to a height of 108 feet. The shikhar is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures of gods and goddesses. The sanctum sanctorum houses the Jyotirlinga of Omkareshwar, which is a natural rock formation in the shape of a lingam. The lingam is divided into two parts, representing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.


The Amareshwar shrine is also a four-story structure with a shikhar that rises to a height of 35 feet. The sanctum sanctorum houses the Jyotirlinga of Amareshwar, which is made of marble and is slightly smaller than the Omkareshwar lingam.


The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year, especially during the festival of Mahashivaratri. The festival is celebrated with great fervor and devotion, and devotees offer prayers and perform rituals to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
